Agence France-Presse: Iran’s “A Separation,” a taut family drama, on Sunday took home the Oscar for best foreign language film, after winning a series of other awards season prizes.

Director Asghar Farhadi dedicated the award to Iranians “who despise hostility and resentment,” and referred to current tension between Tehran and the West, as the film bested movies from Belgium, Poland, Israel and Canada.

Writer-director Farhadi alluded to the tensions over his home country.

Amid talk of “war, intimidation and aggression” among politicians, he said, Iran is “spoken here through her glorious culture, a rich and ancient culture that has been hidden under the heavy dust of politics.”

Iranian “A Separation” wins Cesar award

Iranian celebrated film “A Separation” scored Cesar award for best foreign language film in Annual Cesar Awards ceremony.

The 37th Annual Cesar Awards ceremony, presented by the French Academy of Cinema Arts and Techniques was held on February 24, 2012, at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. The awards honored the best films of 2011.

Farhadi’s latest drama won the award for best foreign language film at the 69th annual Golden Globe scored Cesar award as well.

And it has delighted ordinary Iranians grateful for some glory at a time when international tensions are rising and the country’s regime is ever more isolated.

But not everyone in Tehran is happy that Asghar Farhadi’s hugely successful work, “A Separation” is now a racing certainty to win an Oscar for the best foreign film at this month’s Academy Awards.”

A Separation’s Asghar Farhadi: ‘We need the audience to think’

In a country where lawyers are jailed for defending their clients (such as Nasrin Sotoudeh, who has got 11 years), photographers are arrested for taking photographs (such as Maryam Majd, still missing) and film-makers are sentenced to lengthy terms for making films (such as Jafar Panahi), Asghar Farhadi has proved able to make good films – and even obtain the government approval as well as international admiration after winning the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlin film festival for “A Separation”.
